King River Canyon, Grizzly and Roaring River Falls, Stump Meadow
After a short hike in the Tenmile Creek Meadow I drove the Van up
past Hume Lake and down into the King River Canyon.
By now the Van is proving itself. The roads were mountainous and curvy,
but I was rewarded with some really nice views at turnouts as I made
my way further and further into the canyon. I think it was a 5000ft
elevation change or so.
I was thinking about camping down here, but as I drove I realized that there
was nothing for me. There were tents and R.V.'s already lined up along the highway
at any good spots (lots of fishermen) with but a few single in-between spaces available.
The campground at the end was huge and fairly busy as well.
But I did get to see a few nice waterfalls.
So, I had a little lunch by Roaring River Falls, and then drove the 50-60 miles back up out
of the canyon. Back up at the top, I thought I would go see the Boole Tree and maybe
find a campsite at the same time on a forest service road. So I drove about 5 miles of
fairly rough road before coming to Stump Meadow, below. Theoretically Boole Tree
was only a short walk from the meadow, but once again, without the GPS (or any 24K maps ..
I only had 100K), I wasn't sure how far it was. And since it appeared to be a 30' incline,
I was loathe to try (as I still had to find a campsite for the night).
While checking out secondary service roads off the road to Stump Meadow,
I came across a place that I called "top of the world bowl", which I later found
out is called "Borrow Pit", but was leary of camping there cuz it was the crest visible for
miles and there was not a lot of firewood. But there were some great views.
After going out to the main highway again, I went south to the next service
road (at Cherry Gap) and headed north-west on it, the road to the Chicago Stump,
and came across a site for the 2nd night ...
