Alaska Part 3 - McCarthy Road to Haines
After that, I made ferry reservation, and thus pinned down the
date when I would have to be in Haines to catch it. I allowed
four days to get from the Denali region to Haines, which are both in Alaska.
However, to get from one place to the other, I had to to cross
back thru the Yukon and BC (Canada) again, a relatively long drive,
to re-enter Alaska at Haines.
I allowed some extra time so that I could drive down to
Wrangell St-Elias National Park and McCarthy Road
where I took an interesting, if somewhat uneventful 60 mile out-and-back
(120 mile total) dirt road adventure along the Chitina River, boondocking
for a night along the way.
From McCarthy Road, I drove back up to Tok, and then southeast towards the
Yukon, where I spent the second night just this side of the Canadian border
at a free campground in the Tetlin Wildlife Refuge.
Then I did the long drive back on the Alcan Highway thru the Yukon
Territory again, where I stopped briefly at and
camped at Lake Kluane. Thus I found myself in Canada
again! I turned south at Haines Junction, to drive thru
the Chilkat Pass, stopped at a native village, and re-entered the U.S.
to get to Haines. I spent one more night and part of a day in Haines,
exploring the town and the particularly the native art that we found there.
