Fuerte San Jeronimo

The last of the three forts we visited was Fuerte San Jeronimo. This fort, to the eastern end of the town, was built and rebuilt over the years. It was probably started as early as the 1600's, but was updated as late as 1758, as noted by the date inscribed over the archway as you enter it.

Once again, there were dozens of cannons in several different batteries within the fort, and once again, we could just about see the soldiers fighting and hear the cannons roaring, except by now we were getting a little tired as it was getting to the warmest part of the day and the throngs of tourists were now thicker than ever.

We could have easily spent more time in Portobelo, but we wanted to move on to other shores, and to the San Blas Islands, and so after this one morning exploring the forts and town, and after stopping for a cold beer at a small dockside cafe, we got back in the dinghy, and headed back to RHAPSODY across the bay.

We waited until the cool of the afternoon to put the dinghy away, and had steak & tuna dinner on the boat on our second and last night in historic Portobelo bay.
